I Don't Have Time to Run
Do you find yourself saying "I don't have time to run."? I say it. All the damn time. And the thing is, it feels true. It really does. I have a crazy job with crazy hours at times. Last week, I worked 83 hours from Sunday through Saturday. 83!! That's crazy. When I'm not working, I really want to spend time with my wife so I don't lose that connection we have. I try to help around the house even with my crazy schedule so I'm doing dishes, laundry, changing the sheets. All things that are important. Things that need to be done. So I'm not just making up an excuse of "I don't have time". As I said, it feels completely true.
But here's the thing. I could run at night, in the dark. I could run in the morning, rather than sleeping in to the last minute before my on-call schedule started. A couple weeks ago, work was insane but I had my annual physical. I should have moved it, but I had already done that once. Guess what? Despite how crazy work was, I went to the Doctor appointment and guess what? It was fine. The world didn't end.
So here's my thought: Why can't we treat ourselves and the things we like to do like appointments? Why can't I say, "for this hour on this day, I'm busy." I know for a fact my wife is happier when I'm happy. The laundry will still be there. The dishes aren't going anywhere. I could do those after my run just as easily as I could do them and skip my run. I can do laundry and dishes at nighttime. Which honestly, is easier and safer than running in the dark.
What excuses do you make to put off your goals? Your desires? Why do we feel the need to always put ourselves last? And that's not a male thing. I see my wife do it all the time. (My ex however, did not. She did whatever the hell she wanted...LOL). But, seriously, why do we do that?
All I want, is 3 days per week for about 45-90 minutes to get ready, go for a run or a workout, and come back. 45 to 90 minutes, 3 times per week, doesn't seem like that much to ask. And thing is, I know my wife would say do it! But I hate to ask. I bet you feel the same way.
I just had my birthday recently and this is the gift I want to give myself for this next year. To be willing to ask for what I want. To allow myself time for me. I think you deserve the same.
